Home base of operations in baseball is a five-sided shape. Rule two.02 in MLB'southward handbook precisely defines how to construct the shape.

Dwelling plate is fabricated every bit a 17 inch square with two corners removed. The top border is 17 inches, and its ii adjacent sides are 8.5 inches. The remaining 2 sides are defined to be 12 inches each and they meet at a right angle.

But there's something wrong with this effigy. It's mathematically impossible!

Can you lot figure out why? Let'south assume that all angles and the dimensions of 17 and 8.5 are correct. What should exist the length of the remaining two sides? Can you effigy it out?

Picket the video for a solution.

Reply To Baseball'south Home Plate Is Impossible Mathematically

Let'southward connect the two points that are opposite the sloping lines. This side has a length of 17 inches, and information technology divides home plate into an upper rectangle and a lower isosceles right triangle.

The isosceles right triangle has a hypotenuse of 17 inches. If each leg of the triangle has a length 10, then by the Pythagorean Theorem the sum of the squares of the legs has to be the foursquare of the hypotenuse.

x 2 + ten 2 = 172

two10 two = 17ii

x 2 = 17ii/2

x = 17/√ii ≈ 12.02 inches

Technically the sloping sides should be slightly longer than 12 inches!

While the error is quite small, baseball game is a game of inches. Maybe the next iteration of the rulebook can include the language the sides should be "approximately 12 inches" to exist completely mathematically right.

Merely this rule for home plate has been in the books since 1900. So information technology stands to reason baseball will proceed with this tradition, fifty-fifty if it'southward slightly mathematically incorrect.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2016/official_baseball_rules.pdf
Home base shall be marked by a five-sided slab of whitened safety. It shall exist a 17-inch square with two of the corners removed and so that one edge is 17 inches long, two next sides are eight½ inches and the remaining ii sides are 12 inches and set at an angle to make a point. It shall exist set in the ground with the betoken at the intersection of the lines extending from home base of operations to first base of operations and to third base; with the 17-inch edge facing the pitcher'south plate, and the two 12-inch edges congruent with the offset and third base lines. The top edges of home base shall exist beveled and the base of operations shall be fixed in the ground level with the ground surface. (See drawing D in Appendix two.)

*Notation: drawing D in Appendix 2 indicates the 12 inch sides span a right bending of 90 degrees.

Dwelling house plate is a 17-inch foursquare of whitened rubber with two of the corners removed so that one edge is 17 inches long, two next sides are 8 one/ii inches each and the remaining two sides are 12 inches each and set at an bending to make a betoken. The 17-inch side faces the pitcher's plate, and the two 12-inch edges coincide with the first- and third-base lines. The dorsum tip of home plate must be 127 feet, iii and 3/8 inches away from second base.

PRESH TALWALKAR

I run the MindYourDecisions channel on YouTube, which has over i million subscribers and 200 million views. I am also the author of The Joy of Game Theory: An Introduction to Strategic Thinking, and several other books which are available on Amazon.

(Every bit you might wait, the links for my books go to their listings on Amazon. As an Amazon Acquaintance I earn from qualifying purchases. This does not touch the price yous pay.)

By way of history, I started the Mind Your Decisions blog back in 2007 to share a bit of math, personal finance, personal thoughts, and game theory. It's been quite a journeying! I thank everyone that has shared my work, and I am very grateful for coverage in the printing, including the Shorty Awards, The Telegraph, Freakonomics, and many other pop outlets.

I studied Economics and Mathematics at Stanford University.

People often ask how I make the videos. Like many YouTubers I use pop software to prepare my videos. Yous can search for blitheness software tutorials on YouTube to acquire how to make videos. Be prepared--blitheness is time consuming and software can exist expensive!

Feel gratis to send me an e-mail [email protected]. I get so many emails that I may not answer, but I relieve all suggestions for puzzles/video topics.
